Door County craftsman stars on the international stage: Michael Doerr sweeps top honors ahead of prominent global design firms

STURGEON BAY - Each year Fine Furnishings International's FFI Magazine seeks to act as a catalyst for growth among interior designers, retailers, craftsmen and and manufacturers by honoring the finest works in the field with the Annual Prima Awards. FFI Magazine is published by Grace McNamara Inc., the leader in home furnishings providing a news source that is both educational and informative.

Local craftsman and woodworker Michael Doerr surprised many famous international designers and the firms that represent them by taking the first place Prima Award for the Best New Product of 2006.

FFI Magazine says Doerr, "embodies the trademarks of his work in his Torso Series Rocking Chair. He selects individual pieces of wood to enhance the overall design and maintains the flow of the unbroken line, creating a cohesive and unified design."

Doerr began to conceptualize his award-winning Torso Series rocker with an initial design effort he calls, "Bobbi's Chair," named after his wife and willing model. "The torso is Bobbi's," he explains."I just traced her and started carving."

Andy McGivern, Curator of Exhibitions at Wausau's Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum encouraged Doerr early on in saying, "Michael's 'Bobbi's Chair' appeals to me as an object of art for several reasons. In addition to the chairs honest use of material, it has a clean look with simple design and is constructed with superb craftsmanship. Perhaps more importantly, human comfort is an integral part of its design and the chair succeeds in this category as well."

Doerr took the torso concept to masterpiece level in creating the Torso Series rocker. His furniture has been sought after by collectors across America for many years. Now, he is gaining recognition on an international level.
